Nga Puna Wai
Nga Puna Wai is the home of Canterbury athletics, hockey and rugby league.
Nga Puna Wai means ‘many spring waters’, relating to the many springs and tributaries in the area, and is part of the ancestral landscape of Ngai Tahu. This area was once an important place for local Maori, who came together to connect and collaborate.
Today, our recreational and sporting communities have continued this ethos by coming together to share our love of sport and outdoor spaces.
From destructive 2010 and 2011 earthquakes came the opportunity to explore new possibilities for Christchurch and Canterbury, including the ambition to build world-class sports and recreation venues.
Nga Puna Wai is the realisation of that ambition. Thanks to the courageous and tireless support from Christchurch’s recreational and sporting community, 32 hectares of land has been developed specifically for sport: athletics, hockey, rugby league, tennis and others.
